If you pay a visit to Coorparoo’s Forte School of Music on a Wednesday morning, there’s a good chance you’ll hear a beautiful melody or two.
The instrument is the piano, and the man in the hot seat is CARS client Jock.
Under the tutelage of his teacher, and with the help of his carer Lloyd, Jock has been able to overcome some major roadblocks on his journey.
Once an experienced piano player, a severe brain injury forced him to relearn everything he had been taught, including the development of both hands.
Away from the music room, he also enjoys borrowing movies out from the local library and going for strolls in the park, with regular hydrotherapy sessions helping him increase his mobility.
CARS employee Lloyd has been Jock’s carer for just over a year, and says his progress is one of the many benefits of his role.
“I just like that sort of work – seeing a good outcome. He’s come along really well.”
After working for the Royal Brisbane and Children’s Hospital for 43 years, it was a recommendation from a friend that encouraged Lloyd to give CARS a call.
He says the work he’s been able to do with Jock and other clients has been a rewarding experience, especially helping them set and achieve personal goals.
“You give a little bit, but you see a lot come back.”
“And if you can help them make that little bit of progress, and help them get along…you go home every afternoon feeling a lot better.”
